Walls built up in response to being hurt are there to protect. The mind judges this defensive posture to be a better outcome than potentially subjecting oneself to repeat trauma, which may lead to irreparable damage. Walls prevent deep connection, but they also control suffering.

For healing to take place, walls must come down, but they must come down in a mind and environment where they are not needed. In other words, where the adaptive mechanism has outlived its original purpose and is no longer resourceful.
